Whitaker Staff Review: This is a rock solid performer and a top seller for us. It works exactly as advertised - destroys CD's and DVD's to a top secret specification in seconds. Very quiet and perfect for medium to high volumes. But the Datastroyer DVD-103 doesn't get as much credit as it deserves for destroying credit cards and ID badges! There isn't an NSA specification for shredding them quite yet, but there are tiny microchips inside of those pieces of media. Any secure facility will want a procedure to ensure the destruction of those chips.

We have found that while it granulates the DVD/CD it misses some of the label and will leave strips of the label. Our Government rep questioned this as failing to meet standards. We now do not put any DVD/CD with labels through the Datastroyer 103-DVD. Anything with a label goes through the Datastroyer 101.
Whitaker Brothers Response:
Thank you for the detailed review our 103-DVD shredder. As long as the CD / DVD is destroyed to particles with a nominal edge dimension of 5 millimeters or less and surface area of 25 square millimeters or less it meets the NSA/CSS 04-02 regulation. The model 103DVD is approved under that regulation. If it is only the label that is not destroyed to specification you are still in compliance. The label itself should not have any classified information on it. The NSA/CSS Manual 9-12 under Optical Storage Devices, requires removal of all labels or markings that indicate previous use or classification prior to sanitization. The model 103DVD is far better suited to handle the labels than the model 101CD. Because of the “grinding” style of the 101CD and the small internal screen, paper labels can easily clog the evacuation process. Hope this helps. Please let us know if you require further information.
